Fall 2026 Home Trends
What the October magazines are showing this fall, and how to bring it home before the holidays.
Fall home trends for 2026 lean warm, collected and a little braver than last year. We read through the October issues of Southern Living, Country Living, Better Homes & Gardens and House Beautiful, along with this year's paint colors of the year, and the same few ideas kept coming up.
Here are the seven worth knowing, what each one looks like in a real house, and how to try it without redoing the whole place.
Color
Warm, earthy color wins
The paint brands picked their 2026 colors of the year, and almost every one of them moved away from cool grays toward something grounded: khaki, espresso, soft greens and warm reds.
| Brand | 2026 Color | Code |
|---|---|---|
| Sherwin-Williams | Universal Khaki | SW 6150 |
| Benjamin Moore | Silhouette | AF-655 |
| Behr | Hidden Gem | N430-6A |
| Valspar | Warm Eucalyptus | 8004-28F |
| PPG | Secret Safari | PPG1110-4 |
| Glidden | Warm Mahogany | PPG1060-7 |
| Dutch Boy | Melodious Ivory | 3132DB |
How to try it
- Start with a room you use at night, like a den or dining room, where a deeper color reads cozy instead of dark.
- Keep the ceiling and trim lighter so the room does not close in.
- Test a sample on two walls and look at it in the evening before you commit.
If you are ready to put color on the walls, see our interior painting work.
The Statement Room
One room that goes all the way
Southern Living's 2026 Idea House in Fredericksburg, Texas keeps most of its walls white, then wraps an entire bedroom in green scenic wallpaper, down to a chair upholstered to match. It is the clearest version of a trend running through all the October issues: keep the house calm, and let one room be bold.
Powder rooms, dining rooms and guest rooms are the easiest places to do it. They are small enough to paper in a day or two, and they are the rooms guests see most.
How to try it
- Pick the room first, then the paper. A small room can carry a bigger pattern than you think.
- Order enough rolls from the same print run. A large pattern repeat can take more paper than the square footage suggests.
- Plan on wall repair before the paper goes up. Nail pops and old patches show through.
These are rooms our crews papered. See more on our wallpaper installation page.

Collections come out of the cabinet
Country Living's fall issue is full of plate racks and open shelves for ironstone, spongeware and transferware. The idea is to live with the things you collect instead of storing them.
The shelves behind the collection matter as much as what sits on them. A painted built-in, especially in a deep color, makes white china and old pottery stand out.
How to try it
- Paint the inside back of open shelves a darker color than the room. It frames whatever sits in front of it.
- Use a durable enamel on shelves and built-ins. Dishes and books slide across them every day.
We paint built-ins, shelving and cabinets. See our cabinet and built-in painting.

The Mood
Rooms that invite you to linger
That Country Living cover line sums up the season. The rooms in this fall's magazines are layered and warm, built for people to sit in for an evening rather than to photograph. House Beautiful's 130th-anniversary issue makes the same point from the other direction, with a feature on the art of hosting.
How to try it
- Swap a stark white for a softer, warmer white on walls that get evening lamp light.
- Refresh the rooms where people gather first: living room, dining room and entry.
- Fix the scuffed trim and worn doors. They are what guests notice up close.
The Walls
Gallery walls, hung in a grid
Better Homes & Gardens' October issue features prints hung in tight, even grids as the focal point of a room. Compared with a loose salon-style wall, a grid looks calmer and more deliberate, and it puts the wall color behind the frames front and center.
How to try it
- Paint before you hang. Patching and repainting around twenty nail holes later is twice the work.
- Choose a wall color that is a few shades deeper than the mats so the frames read as one block.
Bold Color
Primary colors, used with warmth
Better Homes & Gardens also visits a Georgian house in London decorated in reds, blues and yellows, with the edges softened so the colors feel rich instead of loud. Glidden's 2026 pick, Warm Mahogany, comes from the same instinct.
How to try it
- Try a primary color on a single element first: a front door, a lacquered cabinet or a dining room ceiling.
- Choose the slightly muted version of the color. It reads warmer and lives better day to day.
Close to Home
The Golden Isles' own palette
Two colors on this list are ours. Southern Living recently named Southern places that have paint colors of their own, and Jekyll Island made it: Valspar's Champagne Toast was blended to reflect the historic color of the Jekyll Island Club.
A soft, warm cream that reads white in the morning and turns golden by late afternoon. Read the Southern Living story.
The other is haint blue, the pale blue-green on the ceilings of so many porches here. The tradition comes from the Gullah Geechee people of the Sea Islands: haints, or restless spirits, were said to be unable to cross water, so a ceiling the color of water kept them off the porch. There is no single haint blue. These six are the shades named most often.
