Grasscloth dining room, bathroom wallpaper and bedroom repaint

This project gave a home in the St. Simons Island Club a grasscloth dining room, with two walls covered in grasscloth, plus the homeowner’s own wallpaper hung in the primary bathroom and a repaint of the primary bedroom.

What the project covered

This Island Club homeowner wanted grasscloth on two walls of the dining room, had picked out wallpaper for the primary bathroom, and wanted the primary bedroom repainted. We handled the wall prep, primer and installation for both wallcoverings, and the full repaint of the bedroom walls.

Installing grasscloth in the dining room

Grasscloth is woven from natural fibers, so the wall underneath has to be smooth and sealed before it goes up. On the two dining room walls, the crew:

  • Repaired any defects in the walls
  • Sanded the walls smooth
  • Applied one coat of acrylic pre-wallcovering primer
  • Hung four 8-yard rolls of grasscloth

The pre-wallcovering primer gives the paste an even surface to grab and makes the wallcovering easier to take down someday without tearing the drywall underneath. See more about our wallpaper installation work.

Hanging the homeowner’s wallpaper in the primary bathroom

The homeowner supplied the wallpaper for the bathroom. We repaired all defects, sanded the walls smooth, applied the same acrylic pre-wallcovering primer and installed 8 single rolls.

One tip if you are buying your own: most wallpaper is priced by the single roll but packaged in double rolls, so 8 single rolls is four double-roll packages.

Repainting the primary bedroom

  • Repaired all wall defects and sanded them smooth
  • Spot primed the repairs
  • Caulked cracks where the trim meets the walls
  • Applied two coats of washable matte latex

Products behind the grasscloth dining room

Both wallcoverings went over an acrylic pre-wallcovering primer: grasscloth in the dining room (four 8-yard rolls) and the homeowner’s own wallpaper in the bathroom (8 single rolls). The bedroom walls got two coats of washable matte latex.

The result

The dining room has two textured grasscloth walls, the primary bathroom is papered in the pattern the homeowner chose, and the bedroom walls are smooth and freshly painted with tight caulk lines at the trim.

Questions about a project like this

Can I supply my own wallpaper?

Yes. The homeowner on this project provided the wallpaper for the primary bathroom, and we handled the wall prep, primer and installation.

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

It depends on the room. This primary bathroom took 8 single rolls (four double-roll packages), and the two dining room walls took four 8-yard rolls of grasscloth. We give you the roll count with your estimate so you know how much to order.
