Why the homeowner called

The homeowner had an estimate from us for staining the upstairs front porch deck that was more than a year old. They called to move forward with it and asked to meet with the original estimator first, so we walked the deck again to go over any changes since the first visit.

What we did

  • Covered the first-floor porch and railings with drop cloths
  • Re-attached a loose deck board with a deck screw
  • Sanded rough areas on the deck boards
  • Applied two coats of SuperDeck semi-transparent water-based stain in Banyan Brown, with drying time between coats
  • Used a 24-foot ladder to reach and stain the outside edge of the deck

Fixing the loose board and sanding the rough spots first gave the stain an even, smooth surface to go on. Learn more about our exterior wood repair.

Choosing Banyan Brown deck stain

The homeowner selected Sherwin-Williams Banyan Brown SW 3522 in a semi-transparent, water-based stain, and confirmed the exact product and color with our office before the job was scheduled. A semi-transparent stain adds color while still letting the wood grain show through.

Before the start date, our team met with the homeowner on site, walked through the process and applied the stain to two deck boards as samples, so the color could be seen on this deck before the full job began.

Protecting the porch below

The upper deck is built to let water pass through between the boards, which means stain can drip onto the porch underneath. At the homeowner’s request, we covered the first-floor porch and its railings with drop cloths before any stain went on.

The result

The upstairs porch deck now has two fresh coats of Banyan Brown, the loose board is secured, and the porch below stayed clean. We left the remaining stain with the homeowner for future touch-ups.

Questions about a project like this

Can I see the stain color on my deck before you start?

Yes. On this deck, our team applied the stain to two boards as samples before the job started, so the homeowner could see the color on their own wood.

Do you repair deck boards before staining?

Yes. Here we re-attached a loose deck board with a deck screw and sanded the rough areas before the first coat of stain.

How do you keep stain off a porch below an upper deck?

We cover the lower porch, railings and anything underneath with drop cloths before staining. This upper deck lets water through between the boards, so the first-floor porch was covered for the whole job.
