Why the homeowners called

The homeowners first asked for estimates on drywall repairs, ceiling repairs and repainting. Once the crew was in the house, they added the kitchen: the cabinets, the tile backsplash and the countertops. Each addition was priced as a written change order before we started it.

Kitchen cabinets with a shop-sprayed finish

  • Removed the doors and drawer fronts and took them to our shop for a spray finish
  • Cleaned every surface with a liquid prep to remove grease and anything that could keep paint from sticking
  • Sanded smooth and caulked cracks
  • Applied one coat of bonding primer and two coats of hybrid acrylic semi-gloss enamel
  • Brushed and rolled the cabinet boxes on site, then reinstalled the doors and drawer fronts

Spraying the doors in the shop gives them a smoother finish than brushing them in the kitchen. Learn more about our cabinet painting on St. Simons Island.

The painted tile backsplash

Tile is glossy, so regular paint will not grip it. The backsplash got one coat of an extreme bonding primer made for slick surfaces, then two coats of Emerald acrylic latex.

Faux-finish countertops

The countertops were refinished in four layers: a primer, a base coat, a hand-applied faux finish and a protective clear coat. See more of our faux finishes.

Drywall and ceiling repairs around the house

Floors and furniture were covered with plastic and drop cloths in every room before repairs started.

  • Upstairs bedroom, office, landing and bathroom ceilings: removed damaged joint tape, installed reinforced flat tape, skimmed the seams smooth, sealed discolored areas with stain-blocking primer and painted with flat ceiling paint
  • Dining room: replaced damaged corner tape, skimmed, primed with stain-blocking primer and touched up to match
  • Kitchen wall: replaced the joint tape with fiber mesh tape, skimmed and touched up in French Blue
  • Living room ceiling: repaired a crack with mesh tape and joint compound and touched it up
  • Primary bedroom: repaired stress cracks in one wall and repainted it
  • Primary bathroom: removed damaged caulk at the crown, recaulked and repainted it in semi-gloss
  • Touch-ups and repairs elsewhere, including the sunroom ceiling and a guest bathroom baseboard

The result

The kitchen has refinished cabinets, a painted backsplash and refreshed countertops, and the ceiling seams and wall cracks around the house are repaired and painted. We left quart cans of the paint for future touch-ups, and the homeowners left us a five-star review when the job was done.

Questions about a project like this

Can you paint a tile backsplash?

Yes. On this kitchen we used an extreme bonding primer made for glossy surfaces and finished with two coats of Emerald acrylic latex.

Why are cabinet doors sprayed in a shop?

A shop spray finish is smoother than brushing doors in place. Here the doors and drawer fronts were sprayed in our shop while the boxes were brushed and rolled on site.

Can you match the existing paint on a repair?

Yes. Most of the wall and ceiling repairs on this house were touched up to match the existing paint, and the upstairs ceilings were repainted with flat ceiling paint.
