Our Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process
Every popcorn ceiling project follows these six steps.
1. Onsite Assessment
An estimator looks at the ceilings and the age of the house. Popcorn ceilings installed before the 1980s can contain asbestos, so a sample is lab tested before any removal.
2. Written Estimate and Scope
You receive a written estimate listing each room, the removal, the finish you chose and the painting.
3. Protection and Cleaning
Furniture is moved out or covered, and floors and walls are covered in plastic sheeting to contain the debris.
4. Removal
The texture is misted with water to soften it, scraped off, and bagged and removed.
5. Repairs and Finishing
Damage uncovered during scraping is repaired, then the ceiling is skim coated smooth or retextured.
6. Prime, Paint and Walkthrough
The ceiling is primed and painted, the plastic comes down, the room is cleaned, and we review the finished ceiling with you.
What Professional Popcorn Ceiling Removal Should Deliver
Tested Before Anything Is Scraped
Asbestos testing on older ceilings before any removal begins.
A Contained Work Area
The room sealed in plastic so dust and debris stay where the work is.
A Smooth, Even Ceiling
No ridges, tool marks or visible seams once the ceiling is painted.
A Room Left Clean
Debris bagged and removed, and the room cleaned before the walkthrough.
Popcorn Ceiling Removal Questions Homeowners Commonly Ask
Does my popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?
Popcorn ceilings installed before the 1980s can contain asbestos. The only way to know is a lab test, which is done before any removal. If the test is positive, removal has to be handled by a licensed abatement contractor.
How long does popcorn ceiling removal take?
Most rooms take several days, because the ceiling needs time to dry between skim coats and before painting. We’ll give you the timeline in your estimate.
How messy is it?
Scraping popcorn is messy, which is why the room is sealed in plastic first. Debris is bagged and removed, and the room is cleaned before we leave.
Can you paint over a popcorn ceiling instead?
Yes, but painted popcorn is much harder to remove later, because the paint seals the texture. If you’re thinking of removing it in the next few years, remove it before painting.
Should I go smooth or retexture?
A smooth ceiling looks cleaner and more current but shows every flaw. Knockdown or orange peel hides small imperfections. We’ll look at the drywall after removal and recommend one.
Can you just repair a damaged spot in a popcorn ceiling?
Yes. Small areas can be patched and blended, though an exact match on old popcorn is hard. See ceiling drywall repair for patching.
